EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE CITY OF ST MARYS

History:

Pennsylvania was influenced by German settlers, and so is the case with the city of St. Marys. It was founded in 1842 by a group of Bavarian Catholics that had to flee the East Coast. First settlers and founders of the city were dominantly doing agriculture and they were known for beer production. These immigrants flew to this area in order to run away from the religious prosecutions. These lands offer them ‘safe haven’, but it was far from being heaven on earth. Their beginning was nothing but a struggle, and that all changed when built of a railroad became a reality. Mining and lumbering were two branches that gave the best benefit for inhabitants of this area.

Landmarks:

Decker’s Chapel: was built in 1856, it is known as the smallest church in the United States.

St. Joseph’s Convent: founded in 1852 this is the oldest Benedictine women’s community in the United States.

Monastery: Build in 1870; this stone monastery has become a hospital in 1922. In the 1990s, it became the residence of the entire Benedictine priest that is serving in the St. Marys.

First hospital: in 1922 three daughters of Andrew Kaul organized and raised funds to convert empty monastery building into a modern hospital. It was administered by the Sisters of the Order of St. Benedict for 45 years.
